Conagen is a growing R&D company located in Boston, Massachusetts. Established in 2009, we focus on using synthetic biology and metabolic engineering techniques to produce high-value ingredients for food, flavor, fragrance, and pharmaceutical industries. We are currently seeking a number of senior scientists and lab technicians to participate in several on-going projects:

 

Two senior computational biologists.
One will focus on exploring existing and newly generated databases for metabolic pathway discovery, and bioinformatics-based enzyme function prediction. The other will focus on design and development of a laboratory automation system anchored by an automatic liquid handling system.

Senior Computational Biologist 1:
Location: Boston, MA
Job Type: Full-time

Overview:
We are looking for an experienced scientist with strong expertise in computational biology to lead research projects that are focused on synthetic biology and metabolic engineering. He/she will apply systems biology and computational biology techniques to understand the metabolic networks, elucidate predictive response biomarkers, and predict enzymatic functions from genetic and genomic data. The candidate should have a strong expertise in modeling of metabolic pathways, statistical algorithms for biomarker discovery, genomic and metabolic data analysis, and proven ability to design experiments to validate the mechanistic insights. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator, self-motivated, and has a track record of finding innovative solutions to complex problems.

Job Requirements:
• PhD in computational biology or equivalent with at least three years of post-graduate experience.
• Experience with mechanistic pathway modeling (ODEs, PDEs and multi-parameter optimization), medium to large-scale mathematical models of biological phenomena (e.g., signaling pathways, metabolic pathways) and statistical analysis (hypothesis testing, ANOVA, experiment design), and machine-learning algorithms (e.g., support-vector machines, decision trees).
• Solid understanding of the concepts of molecular biology as applied to transcriptional and post-translational regulatory networks and their deregulation in metabolic pathways.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, proven ability to work flexibly and collaboratively within and across multidisciplinary teams.

Senior Computational Biologist 2:
Location: Boston, MA

Overview:
We are looking for an experienced scientist or engineer with strong expertise in automatic system programing. The person will be responsible for integration of a Beckman liquid handling system with multiple high-throughput analytical instruments, such as LC-MS and plate-reader. He/she will be in charge of implementation and optimization of laboratory scale of automations that link the automatic systems with various databases.

Job Requirement:
• A minimum of B. Sc. Degree in computer science or engineering.
• Experience with laboratory automation system design, implementation, maintenance, and/or optimization.
• Experience with multiple system integration will be a plus.
• Experience with incorporation of databases with automation system will be a plus.

One senior protein scientist to focus on protein structure analysis and modeling for the purpose of protein engineering.

Overview:
We are currently seeking a senior Protein Chemist to lead discovery projects related to metabolic engineering of plant and microbial secondary metabolites. This position will focus on protein engineering and the candidate is expected to have a strong background in protein structure and biochemistry, and be able to translate protein structural concepts into novel protein engineering strategies. The successful candidate should be able to work across scientific disciplines to connect the fields of protein structure, enzymology, and molecular biology. Experience in using various programs for analysis of molecular modeling, protein docking and folding is a plus.

Job Requirement:
• A Ph.D. in biochemistry, enzymology, molecular biology, or other related field with 1 to 3 years experience is required.
• The candidate should possess a demonstrated ability to work independently in the design, execution and interpretation of complex experiments along with a proven track record of achievement in the field of protein engineering.

One senior biochemist to focus on enzyme discovery and functional analysis.
We are interested in candidates with experience in plant/fungal/bacterial cell wall biochemistry or secondary metabolisms.

Overview:
We are currently seeking a senior Biochemical Scientist to lead discovery projects related to identification and functional characterization of metabolic enzymes in various pathway engineering projects. The person will be in charge of discovery of putative candidate genes based on homology and genomic information, cloning of the candidate genes, developing assay methods for functional identification of the enzymes, in vivo and in vitro enzyme expression and pathway engineering, further improvement of the enzyme by mutagenesis and directed evolution.

Job Requirement:
• A PhD in molecular biology, enzymology, or synthetic biology.
• At least three years of postdoctoral experience in related fields.
• The candidate should possess a demonstrated ability to work independently in the design, execution and interpretation of complex experiments along with a proven track record of achievement in the field of protein engineering.

Four laboratory technicians to support the above projects.

Laboratory technicians:
We are currently seeking candidates for four position of Research Technician to assist our research scientists in research on genetic engineering of industrial microbes such as E. coli and yeast.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform routine molecular biology lab duties such as DNA, RNA extraction, plasmid mini-prep, PCR, RT-PCR, restriction digestion, ligation, vector construction, and genetic transformation of bacteria and yeast.
• Perform basic lab maintenance tasks such as ordering laboratory reagents and small equipment, media, stock solution and competent cell preparation, sterile technique, and keeping detailed lab records.
• Express proteins in E. coli and yeast. Purify and analyze expressed proteins by SDS-PAGE and/or Western Blot.
• Familiarity with diverse software packages for data processing and statistical analysis, primer design and sequence blasting and alignment.
• Operate laboratory and experimental equipment such as spectrophotometers, centrifuges, autoclaves, HPLC, FPLC and GC/MS.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a field of molecular biology; Master or PhD degree is preferred.

Senior Scientist—Fermentation Process Development.

Senior Scientist—Fermentation Process Development:

Overview:
The Process Development Group provides support through the development and optimization of production processes. We work with our Strain Development team and manufacturing colleagues. We are seeking a Fermentation Scientist to join our Process Development team. Responsibilities include all aspects related to development of a robust and scalable process and subsequent technical transfer of the process to pilot scale. Candidate will participate in a range of specific activities including, but not limited to: (1) defining unit operations, (2) media screening and development, (3) fermentation process development and scale-up, (4) authoring technical reports, (5) training of junior staff. The successful candidate will also provide technical and scientific leadership and subject matter expertise, both in research and development, as well as in manufacturing and life cycle management. The individual is expected to provide technical leadership to various functional and strategic teams engaged in product/process development. The successful candidate will guide and mentor the process development associates, typically focusing on 1-2 programs at a time, while coordinating the overall program activities across much larger multi-functional and cross-divisional teams.

Responsibilities:
This position will have the responsibility to design and execute experiments independently or with minimal supervision or guidance.
• Plan, design and execute complete projects; providing imaginative and thorough solutions to a wide range of difficult assignments.
• Maintain a level of scientific knowledge in assigned area; perform scientific literature searches and evaluations as required and understand/comply with accepted laboratory and safety procedures.
• Work closely with internal and external departments to ensure the efficient progress of projects.
• Lead an innovative team, design project experiments and give overall direction.
• Troubleshoot equipment and processes.
• Prepare SOPs and other technical documentation.
• Scale-up and scale-down processes.
• This position will have responsibility for a complete process and would be expected to use the knowledge and skills to mentor / advise more junior team members.

Requirements:
Master’s Degree in biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, microbiology, or biotechnology with a minimum of 10 years of experience in biotechnology industry; a PhD in biochemical engineering, chemical engineering microbiology, or biotechnology with a minimum of 5 years of experience in biotechnology industry.
• Strong background in microbial fermentation and downstream purification.
• Demonstrated excellence in fermentation process development including a variety of control strategies.
• Experience with diverse microorganisms preferred.

Research Associate—Fermentation Process Development.

Research Associate—Fermentation Process Development:

Overview:
The Process Development Group provides support through the development and optimization of production processes. We work with our R&D and manufacturing colleagues. We are seeking a Research Associate to join our Fermentation Process Development team. This individual will collaborate with Scientists and Process Engineers to design experiments, analyze and record results, and participate in scale-up/scale down transfer activities.
This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the demonstration of a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative applied to the various duties and aspects of the position. This position will be responsible for the day-to-day fermentation operations and will assist in the development and optimization of new, robust fermentation processes at lab scale.

Responsibilities:
• Operate and monitor fermentation processes ranging from 1L to 50L.
• Perform routine sample analysis such as assays for glucose and dry cell weight.
• Operation of associated lab equipment.
• Troubleshoot equipment and processes.
• Prepare media, solutions and buffers.
• Prepare SOPs and other technical documentation.
• Assist in process scale-up and scale down.
• Maintain laboratory notebooks and batch records.
• Maintain laboratory and ensure equipment is in good working order.
• Contribute and adhere to all safety standards and practices.

Requirements:
B.S. degree and 1+ years of experience.
• Previous experience with any of the following microbial processing steps: fermentation, purification, media/buffer preparation, equipment assembly/cleaning/sterilization, process monitoring and sampling.
• Familiarity with basic laboratory equipment: fermentors, pH meter, autoclaves, laboratory scales, equipment washers, centrifuges, computers and other instrumentation.
• Experience in Process Development preferred.
• Basic knowledge of microbiology and good aseptic techniques.

Sr. Process/Project Engineer(s).

Sr. Process/Project Engineer(s)

Overview:
Reporting to the Sr. VP Engineering & Manufacturing, the Process and/or Project Engineer(s) will facilitate technology transfer from R&D to production scale and coordinate all activities related to the design and construction of Conagen’s new Pilot Plant with outside engineering & construction firm (EPC). The ideal candidate(s) will have a strong experience in process development, engineering and manufacturing in the biotechnology, food or chemical process industries.

Job responsibilities include but not limited to:
Preliminary conceptual scale-up through block flow diagrams, process modeling and simulation of lab scale processes coming either from Conagen’s internal R&D group or from outside global clients and partners. Prepare process and operations basis for scaling up various products to our pilot plant scale with fermentors above 4,000-L.
• Transfer conceptual plant design into Basic Engineering Design and Detailed Engineering Design by coordinating activities with external EPC firm.
• As a senior Process or Project Engineer, actively participate in and oversee the development of PFDs, Mass and Energy Balances, P&IDs, Equipment Specifications & Procurement documentation, Process Controls, Process & Facility Utilities, Facility Layouts, documentation for Permitting requirements.
• Interface with other engineering disciplines (mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, automation, architecture, civil / structural, etc.) to ensure a coordinated design and completed engineering deliverables by the EPC group.
• Interface with management, customers and vendors to define project scope, resolve technical issues, and assist with preparation of RFPs, RFQs and procurement documents.
• Check vendor drawings to ensure design accuracy and compliance with specifications.
• Construction support activities including responding to submittals and RFIs.

Job Requirements:
Minimum 5-10 years of experience in the biotechnology industry either in operating companies’ process development, engineering or manufacturing departments or Engineering & Construction companies’ Process, Mechanical, Facilities or Project Engineering disciplines.
Project engineering and management experience with fast track approach is a plus.
Experience in GMP bioprocess operations with sanitary design, especially in industrial scale microbial fermentations, biocatalysis, downstream processing (DSP) including depth or tangential flow filtration (MF, UF), centrifugation, chromatography purification, solvent extraction, evaporation, crystallization, distillation, drying.
Familiarity with GMP, FDA, Kosher requirements for the food ingredients, nutraceuticals, flavors and fragrances industries.
Proficient in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Project), familiar with AutoCAD and various process or operations simulation programs (e.g. SuperPro, CHEMCAD).

We are currently seeking a scientist to support projects related to metabolic engineering of plant and microbial secondary metabolites. This position will focus on two areas of related expertise: 1) small molecule extraction from plants tissues or microbial cultures; and 2) will perform HPLC and GC analyses including method development and optimization. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in small molecule extraction and HPLC/GC techniques. The ideal candidate will have experience in developing novel small molecule extraction methods using various instrumentations, such as solvent extraction, LC, TLC, SPE, HSCCC, etc. Strong technical, organizational, and communication skills, as well as the ability to develop creative solutions to challenging problems, are essential.

Responsibility:
Routinely perform small molecule extraction in support of research projects.
• Develop novel small molecule extraction methods if necessary.
• Operate and managing HPLC and GC in support of research projects.
• Work collaboratively with other team members to accomplish project goals and milestones.
• Routinely tracking and documenting results in laboratory notebooks and databases.

We are seeking a senior administrative assistant who directly supports company executives with a wide variety of high level/complex administrative functions using considerable discretion and judgment.

Responsibility:
Acts as a liaison between Executive and Sr. Management, visitors, and other personnel. Answers questions and furnishes information not requiring the attention of the executives.
• Coordinates and schedules meetings and travel arrangements ensuring that executives meet their commitments. Arranges and prepares for meetings, special events, etc. by booking proper facility, sending invitations, ordering food/beverages, prepare materials, and general set up.
• Composes, drafts and edits correspondence on behalf of the executives.
• Coordinates data from a variety of sources for inclusion in reports and presentations. Prepares presentations, reports, etc. Assembles data in preparation for business meetings.
• Handles sensitive and/or classified material strictly in accordance with corporate policy and instructions from executive. Maintains a high degree of confidentiality in dealing with highly sensitive matters.
• Function as HR Coordinator, including new employee orientation, preparing HR paper works, coordinating safety training, collecting and filing employee insurance paper works, recording employee vacations and sick days. Audits time sheets for accuracy and completeness, and submits to payroll for processing.

Job Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent.
3+ years related experience in assisting a Sr. level Manager or Executive.

Conagen offers a limited number of outstanding students the opportunity to participate in the company´s internship program each year. Our program is geared towards highly talented and motivated students looking for a part time position that is both intellectually challenging and offers insight into the workings of biotech. It provides a unique professional experience in a fast-paced biotech setting. We are highly selective and look for the best and brightest.
