Established in 2009, we focus on using synthetic biology and metabolic engineering techniques to produce high-value ingredients for food, flavor, fragrance, and pharmaceutical industries. We are currently seeking a number of senior scientists and lab technicians to participate in several on-going projects:

 

Research Associate - Microbial Synthetic Biology

Research Associate – Microbial Synthetic Biology:
Location: Conagen Inc – Bedford, MA

Overview:
We are currently seeking a scientist to support projects related to metabolic engineering of plant and microbial secondary metabolites. This position will focus on microbial metabolic engineering and the candidate is expected to have a strong background in metabolic engineering, molecular biology, genetics, and ideally synthetic biology. Strong technical, organizational, and communication skills are essential.

Responsibility:
• Routinely perform molecular biology techniques such as primer design, PCR, DNA and RNA extraction, DNA mutagenesis, DNA cloning, plasmid mini-prep, DNA sequence analysis, cell transformation, cell culture, and other more advanced molecular biology techniques in support of research projects.
• Experience with mechanistic pathway modeling (ODEs, PDEs and multi-parameter optimization), medium to large-scale mathematical models of biological phenomena (e.g., signaling pathways, metabolic pathways) and statistical analysis (hypothesis testing, ANOVA, experiment design), and machine-learning algorithms (e.g., support-vector machines, decision trees)Perform experiments for enzymatic activity testing including express proteins in E. coli and yeast, recombinant proteins purification; analyze expressed proteins by SDS-PAGE and/or Western Blot and enzymatic assays. Perform sample preparation and run routine analyses with HPLC and GC instruments.
• Operate laboratory and analytical equipment such as spectrophotometers, centrifuges, shakers.
• Work collaboratively with other team members to accomplish project goals and milestones.
• Routinely tracking and documenting results in laboratory notebooks and databases.
• Analyze, summarize, and present experimental results to team leader and other team members.

Qualification:
• A Master’s or Ph.D. degree in metabolic engineering, molecular biology, molecular genetics, synthetic biology, or other related field with relevant industrial experience.
• Strong background in metabolic engineering, molecular biology, genetics, and ideally synthetic biology with experience in recombinant DNA technologies, protein analysis, enzymatic assays, and cell transformation.
• Experience in engineering of metabolic pathways in microbial hosts is highly preferred.
• Prior experience in high-throughput screening using automated lab equipment is highly preferred.
• Work experience in an industrial setting is preferred.
• Familiarity with analytical techniques for metabolite detection such as spectrophotometers, and HPLC is a plus.
• Familiarity with diverse software packages for data processing and statistical analysis, primer design and sequence blasting and alignment.
• Must be highly-motivated and able to work independently while also possessing exceptional communication and teamwork skills.

Research Associate - Automation

Research Associate – Automation:
Location: Conagen Inc. – Bedford, MA

Overview:
We are currently seeking candidates for a Research Associate position to assist our Automation Scientists. The successful candidate will support and develop automation solutions related to the genetic engineering and screening of industrial microbes.
The candidate must have experience in molecular biology, and the culturing and assaying of microorganisms. Prior background in high-throughput screening using automated lab equipment is highly desired, particularly liquid handling robots.
The ideal candidate will also have an understanding of bioinformatics tools and databases and the skills to process large data sets. Fluency in Python, vbscript, Matlab, or equivalent programming languages for tool development or data analysis is a plus.
Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.

Responsibility:
• Program and execute automated experiments and high-throughput screens
• Perform analysis and bioinformatics so support the design, test, build cycle
• Assist with programming and executing experiments and high-throughput screens on automated lab equipment such as
• Liquid handlers
• Fermentation systems
• Spectrophotometers
• Operate independently, anticipating the needs of collaborators and team members
• Track progress and present results to manager and collaborators
• Routinely maintain records and results in laboratory notebooks and databases
• Assist with occasional weekend tasks when required

Qualification:
• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in biology, biotechnology or related fields OR several years of experience in automation technology
• Molecular biology proficiency (minipreps, PCR, restriction digest, transformation, gels)
• Robust understanding of experimental methodology, use of controls, etc

Research Scientist - Natural Product Downstream Purification & Analysis


Research Scientist – Natural Product Downstream Purification & Analysis
:
Location: Conagen Inc. – Bedford, MA

Overview:
We are currently seeking a research scientist to support projects related to novel complex natural product isolation and structure determination. This position will focus on downstream purification and analysis. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in natural product extraction and purification, and analytical chemistry. Strong technical, organizational, and communication skills are essential.

Responsibility:
• Routinely perform isolation, extraction, distillations, purification, structure elucidation, structural characterization, and phytochemistry
• Comprehensive experience in chromatography for isolation and purification of natural products and extracts with normal and reverse phase HPLC (analytical and preparative scale), GC, TLC, semi-preparative LC, and GPC. Ability to decipher NMR data for structural characterization.
• Expertise in analytical method development and validation for Natural Products and Metabolite identification and Quantification by HPLC
• Work with cross functional groups to deliver natural product expertise and Analytical science input.
• Manage research projects to achieve milestones in a timely manner. This includes independently leads projects from planning though analysis, experimental design, always to reporting.
• Routinely track and document results in laboratory notebooks and databases.
• Analyze, summarize, and present experimental results to team leader and other team members.

Qualification:
• A Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering or related discipline with relevant industrial experience.
• Strong background in downstream purification and analysis.
• 2 or more years’ work experience in an industrial setting is preferred.
• Familiarity with analytical techniques for intermediates and final product detection such as spectrophotometers and HPLC.
• Must be highly-motivated and able to work independently while also possessing exceptional communication and teamwork skills.

Internship Program

Conagen offers a limited number of outstanding students the opportunity to participate in the company´s internship program each year. Our program is geared towards highly talented and motivated students looking for a part time position that is both intellectually challenging and offers insight into the workings of biotech. It provides a unique professional experience in a fast-paced biotech setting. We are highly selective and look for the best and brightest. We welcome applicants with a strong drive to achieve goals and exceed expectations. The program consists of an initial training period followed by work in existing projects and general lab techniques.
